Stephen Warnock, who is the former Aston Villa full-back, did feel that the manager, Unai Emery, got it wrong by substituting Marcus Rashford against Paris Saint-Germain at Villa Park on Tuesday.
Leading the second leg 3-2, Villa did substitute Rashford for Ollie Watkins in the 76th minute. It did make an aggregate of 5-4 in favour of PSG as they won the first leg 3-1. Villa needed one goal to draw the tie.
As per several fans and pundits, Rashford looked very sharp. And playing the England international with Watkins could have added that one required goal.
Warnock said: “I don’t know what Unai Emery saw, with the way Marcus Rashford was playing, he got it wrong.”
“It felt like the tempo dropped when he made that substitution. You need a goal – why are you taking a striker off?”
A win at Villa Park would have taken Aston Villa to the semi-finals of the UCL. However, now they have a task of six games left to make sure that Villa can play in Europe next season too.
