MS Dhoni is set to make a comeback as the Chennai Super Kings captain due to arm fracture-hit Ruturaj Gaikwad is ruled out of the Indian Premier League 2025.
CSK’s head coach Stephen Fleming did update this news on Thursday. Ahead of Friday’s clash against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Fleming sent the mega confirmation via a press conference.
He said: “MS Dhoni will return to captain Chennai Super Kings in the absence of Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has been ruled out of IPL 2025 with an arm fracture, head coach Stephen Fleming said on Thursday. “Ruturaj is ruled out of the tournament. He got hit in Guwahati (versus Rajasthan Royals) and has been operating with an amount of pain. We had an MRI, which revealed a fracture in his elbow, in the radial neck,”
He added: “We have an uncapped player, MS Dhoni, who will take over as captain for the remainder of the IPL.”
Dhoni last led the CSK in the 2023 IPL final, where they beat the Gujarat Titans by five wickets.
Dhoni, as a captain, has won five IPL titles with CSK. Other than Mumbai Indians’ Rohit Shamra, MSD is the only captain to win five IPL.
Chennai are ninth in the IPL table, losing four of their opening five games.
