It was a bitter-sweet game for the USC Trojans against Mississippi State. They reached the Sweet 16 but saw start player JuJu Watkins facing injury.
The school did make it clear on Monday night that Watkins will miss the remainder of the season. During the highly-anticipated game, where USC registered a 96-59 win and made it to the Sweet 16, the 19-year-old injured her right knee (5th mintue) early in the game.
uJu will have surgery and later start rehabilitation, as confirmed by her team.
While Juju drove towards the basket, she fell in an instance battle and went down to the surface. As she did grab her kee for 60 seconds, it was clear that a major injury had taken place already.
It was a very shocking moment for the fans at Galen Center. Trainers then picked her up from the ground and took her to the locker room.
Looking at her initial form, she was looking very sharp early in the contest.
During the middle of the game, USC Trojans staff said that the medical team was taking care of her to see possible injuries.
Kiki Iriafen then took over the responsibility, adding a season-best 36 points and nine rebounds. The injury made the USC fans so worried that every time Mississippi State got the ball, they did revert with ‘boooo’ sound.
“This team rallied, they rallied for her, they rallied for each other,” Gottlieb said.
JuJu Watkins is being seen as one of the top young players in women’s basketball. Many experts feel that she has a bright future ahead.
