Conmebol, the South American governing body of football, has sent a proposal to FIFA to make the 2030 World Cup have 64 teams.
Ahead of the 2030 WC, the United States, Canada and Mexico will host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The mega showdown in North America will be the first edition to allow 48 teams to compete for the ultimate glory.
As in the 2022 edition and before, the FIFA World Cup (men’s) was all about having 32 teams.
The FIFA 2030 edition will also be the first where three nations each from two continents will host the event.
From Europe, Spain, Portugal and Morocco hold the rights. Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay carry the South American rights to host the opening games of the World Cup.
The 2030 FIFA WC will take place from 8 June to 21 July.
Not to forget that 2030 will be the 100th anniversary of the FIFA World Cup.
Conmebol president Alejandro Dominguez said: “This will allow all countries to have the opportunity to live the world experience and so nobody on the planet is left out of the party.”
“We are convinced that the centennial celebration will be unique because 100 years are celebrated only once.”
