Boxing manager and promoter Sam Jones emotionally urged Joe Joyce to say goodbye to the professional boxing world.
Joyce, who won the silver medal at the 2016 Olympics for Britain as a heavyweight, lost a 10-round fight against Filip Hrgovic last weekend (Saturday) in Manchester, England.
The defeat was Joyce’s fourth in the last five outings. The 38-year-old heavyweight boxer was flying high from 2020 to 2022.
In between, he even beat Daniel Dubois and Joseph Parker. However, the year of 2023 did hit him hard. Joyce, who was famous then for taking punches and moving still forward to beat the opponent, lost twice to Zhilei Zhang of China.
Last year, he even lost the fight against Derek Chisora who has long past his best touch. Despite it being a very close fight against Hrgovic, Joyce’s former manager feels it’s time to leave the sport.
He said on the IFL TV YouTube channel: “There’s more to life than boxing.”
In a total of 20 pro contests, Joyce has lost four and won 16. He made his debut in the professional ranks in Oct 2017.
Back in 2023, many boxing fans and pundits rated the Juggernaut as one of the top five active heavyweights. But now they are worried about future injuries he could have, in case, Joyce keeps on fighting ahead.
