It was another setback for every Chennai Super Kings fan as they faced a massive 25-run defeat to the Delhi Capitals at the M A Chidambaram Stadium.
DC, who approached the match after winning the games against Lucknow Super Giants and Sunrisers Hyderabad, won the toss and picked to bat first on Saturday evening.
Jake Fraser-McGurk went out scoring zero. However, his opening partner K.L. Rahul smashed a match-winning 77 runs in 51 balls.
Rahul’s crucial display did get backing from Abishek Porel’s 33, Axar Patel’s 21, Sameer Rizvi’s 20 and Tristan Stubbs’s 24 runs to give the home side an 184-run target.
The CSK top order failed to shine, with Rachin Ravindra (3 runs), Devon Conway (13) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (5) scoring a combined 21 runs and putting a lot of pressure on the middle order.
Vijay Shankar remained strong at one end, but he did not get the backing from Shivam Dubey (18 runs) and Ravindra Jadeja (2).
MS Dhoni came a bit early, but the veteran cricketer took 30 balls to score 26 runs (not out).
It did put pressure on Shankar, who was not able to convert things faster from the set position. He added 69 not out but in 54 balls.
As a result, CSK have now lost three of their first four games. Meanwhile, DC are still unbeaten with six points in three matches.
The DC bowling unit took wickets collectively at the right time and won the game in comfort.
